  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 8 oz dark chocolate
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp orange zest
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line three 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla; mix until smooth. Gradually stir in hot coffee or water.
  3. Divide batter evenly among pans and bake for 25–30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
  4. For the orange filling, whisk sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks in a saucepan. Gradually add orange juice and cook over medium heat until thickened; stir in zest and butter.
  5. For the ganache, heat heavy cream until steaming. Pour over chopped chocolate and let sit before stirring until smooth; mix in butter.
  6. Assemble by layering cake with orange filling between layers and pour ganache on top. Garnish with fresh orange slices.
